The Challenge
Over 2 Million college-educated immigrants are underemployed in the US, meaning that they have degrees or certifications for higher wage jobs than they currently hold.
There is an extensive set of cultural and systemic barriers driving immigrant underemployment, that results in these families being set back for many years while depriving our economy of much-needed talent and diversity.
One issue is a lack of workforce development programming that is differentiated based on skill-level. As a result, many newcomers are often guided into "survival jobs" that do not pay a living wage, do not offer opportunities for career advancement, and are not aligned with their skills.
Our grant
Upwardly Global works to find the most efficient path to thriving-wage, skill-aligned employment for immigrant and refugee professionals, with an emphasis on high-growth career paths in fields like tech, healthcare and finance. To-date, they have successfully transitioned over 9,700 newcomers out of poverty into professional roles with an average increase in earnings of $58,000 for 2022 participants.
Through an investment in Upwardly Global's suite of tech-enabled products and services, this grant will significantly scale up the number of people that can participate in these programs with a goal of reaching 25,000 job seekers annually by 2026.
