The Challenge
Africa is the world’s youngest and fastest growing region, and will have the largest labor force by 2030. Yet, only 12% of young Africans are in university, and young Africans do not have the education and experience needed to attain high-earning jobs. Financial constraints are the biggest barrier to university completion for young Africans. This project reduces the financial barriers that prevent them from entering and persisting in higher education by helping them “earn while they learn.” Participants will earn income, build technical skills, and gain employment experience, which will make them more competitive for high-earning roles after graduation.
Our Grant
This grant will be used to train and deploy Nigerian and Kenyan university students as Automation Assistants for startups and small businesses. Automation Assistants help businesses operate more efficiently by building custom software using no-code and low-code tools. The program will take students studying computer science and other technical subjects, equip them with automation expertise and communication skills, then match them with businesses who want to scale their impact through automation and data analysis. The program aims to place 80% of participants in a job earning at least US$400 a month within 3 months of training completion. Participants will increase their monthly income by over 300% and gain valuable work experience.
The projected ROI for this grant is $173 of increased earnings for every dollar we invest.
